IELTS for Nurses: Band Score Requirements for Nursing Registration Worldwide

🇬🇧Nursing Registration in the UK (NMC)

The UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 in *all four components* — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. There is no overall score threshold, and bands cannot compensate for each other.

You may combine results from two IELTS sittings taken within six months — but *each sitting must score at least Band 6.5 in every component*. The NMC also accepts OET with Grade B in all four skills.

After meeting English requirements, you’ll need to pass the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) before full NMC registration.

🇦🇺Nursing Registration in Australia (AHPRA)

AHPRA requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall *and* Band 7.0 in each component — achieved in a single test sitting or across two sittings within six months.

Accepted alternatives include OET (Grade B in all four skills), PTE Academic (65 in each skill), and TOEFL iBT (94 overall, with minimums per section).

In addition to English, you’ll need a skills assessment through ANMAC and may be required to complete a bridging program depending on your qualifications.

Canada regulates nursing provincially. Most internationally educated nurses start with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), which assesses credentials and sets English benchmarks — often aligned with CLB 7.

IELTS Academic is widely accepted: Ontario requires Band 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0); other provinces may require Band 7.0. CELBAN is also commonly used and often preferred by nurses.

Private hospitals may accept lower scores or alternate tests (OET, TOEFL iBT). Government facilities and top-tier employers often require Band 7.0+ — especially for leadership or ICU roles.

🇸🇦Nursing Registration in Saudi Arabia (SCFHS)

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) requires a minimum IELTS Academic Band 6.0 overall for most nursing positions — one of the lowest thresholds globally.

However, major hospital groups (e.g., King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Mayo Clinic Riyadh) and senior roles often require Band 7.0+. Strong English skills significantly improve job offers, salary negotiations, and career progression.
